Arrived - November 4, 2021

We are finally here!  I have just woken up from our first sleep in South Africa.  We left Toronto at 7:10 p.m. and landed in Amsterdam 7 hours later, around 2 in the morning our time, but 7 a.m. Amsterdam time.  We waited for 3 hours in the airport where we did lots of walking and departed again at 10:15 a.m..  This flight was 11 hours long and it certainly felt it!  We did have a window seat this time, which was really nice as we flew pretty much in daylight all the way and we could see quite a bit.  Sometimes it was too cloudy, but we saw lots of deserts, the Mediterranean Sea, oil rigs in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Namibia.....  It was dark when we landed in Cape Town.  We also had some nice conversations with our dutch seat partner who was a retired Shell executive who had lived in many places in the world during his career.

Everything at the airport went very smoothly from going through security, getting our baggage, and being picked up by our airport hotel shuttle.  Ken and Trudy did leave a bag at the airport shuttle pick-up spot, but another group also waiting for the same hotel kept it safe until the shuttle returned with an anxious Ken right away and retrieved it.  What a relief as many of their important papers were inside!  We were very happy to be at our hotel, although not feeling too sleepy because of the time change.  By the time we turned out the lights it was 2 a.m. here, but only 8 p.m. our time.  Regardless, we fell straight to sleep and slept well.  Not much sleep happened on the planes.

I am now up early, 6:30 a.m. here and writing this update.  We are having breakfast together at 8:30 and meeting Cornelius and Lizette at 10 a.m.
