November 6, 2021 - Table Mountain

Pete and I had trouble with our alarm, so even though we were awake, we did not go upstairs until 5:35 and had to leave for our hike without having breakfast or anything to drink.  Not a good start.  We had to walk to the starting point, about 8 minutes from our house.  We were met by our guide Riane and away we went.  It started out as a rough roadway, but was quite steep.  He set a sedate pace and stopped often to point out plants or sights.  This helped us catch our breath.  Table Mountain is about 1000 metres of gain and the route we took was about 6 km long.  At times it was very steep and scrabbly, but we enjoyed it sooo much.  We considered not going many times as we were afraid our fitness level would not be sufficient, but we had no problem at all.  We saw so many beautiful plants and vistas.  Truly the most amazing place we have ever been.  Our guide also added so much to our enjoyment of the hike.   The hikers were Pete and I, Ken Boers and Gary and Rose Tamming.  The others met us at the top of Table Mountain around 11 a.m. where we had coffee and something good to eat.

We got back to the house around 1 p.m. and John and Wendy were waiting for us.  They had been golfing in another part of South Africa. In the afternoon, some of us stayed at the house and some went to Camps Bay beach to walk around.  At 5:30 we went back to the Victoria and Alfred waterfront to look around for a while and have supper at 8:00 p.m.  The waterfront is a beautiful, historic place with a real carnival atmosphere.  Dinner was at 'Harbour Front', a lovely seafood restaurant.
